This papeı- prcsents an algorithnı foı· thedesign of minimum weight of speed reducer., geartrain, subject to a specificd set of constraints. Thestudy is p rimari1y aimed to expose the potential ofgenetic algorithms, to discuss their applicationcapabilities, and to show the concept of thesealgorithms as optiınization techniques an d theirscope of application by implementing them to thespeed reducer. Results obtained for the minimum\Veight of speed reducer are prescnted to provideinsight into the capabilities of these tecbniques.Genetic algorithms are efficient search techniqucswhich are inspircd fronı natural genetics selectionprocess to cxplore a given search space.
