Exploring the evolution of leadership in government: a bibliometric study from e-government era into the digital age
Abstract
This study offers a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of leadership research within the digital transformation of the governmental sector, a subject increasingly relevant in our digital world. An in-depth analysis of 358 scholarly articles, spanning from 2004 to 2023, outlines the progression of leadership from the era of e-government to the current digital epoch. Through bibliometric assessment, we illuminate influential papers, author affiliations, and shifts in academic focus. The study emphasizes the growing importance of leadership in the digital age. It culminates in the emergence of a leadership model for the digital era, encapsulating strategic leadership, transformational leadership, and digital leadership. Furthermore, the study delineates the escalating significance of digital leadership roles and competencies in global governmental structures.
