Long-standing diabetes mellitus (DM) with poor metabolic control can produce permanent and irreversible functional changes and damage to organs and tissues, thus producing complications that mainly result from biochemical, structural and functional abnormalities. Poor glycemic control and the development and progression of microvascular complications (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) have been causally associated; Due to complications in the microvasculature, any system or organ can be affected and the skin is no exception.
