The purpose of this study is to show that certain cases of heteromorphemic gemination can be better explained through showing their relatedness to syllable structure and stress (cf. McCarthy (1979) and (1986)). The data show that stress and syllable structure play a major role in creating some cases of heteromorphemic gemination. Moreover, the paper focuses on viewing assimilation, which also plays a role in creating other cases of heteromorphemic geminates. as a spreading phenomenon. The data discussed in this paper are from Standard Arabic (SA). JA. and Palestinian Arabic (PA). Major theories about gemination are briefly presented in this paper.
