The aim of this article is to outline the path of growth and development that proceeds from the icon to the cultural icon, defining its semiotic status and describing the specificities of its formation. The cultural icon is, from the semiotic point of view, a symbolic hypoicon generated in the symbolic way within a specific sub-culture. Cultural icons can reach a higher level of brand awareness and they permit heritage marketing actions.
