This article analyses the foreign direct investment evolution and the performance of the Brazilian exports in the 1990, s. In the decade of 1980 and 1990 the flow of foreign direct investment has had an outstanding expansion, as well as the exports in a world-wide level. This process has affected the emerging countries and Brazil. In the Brazilian case, the liberalization of foreign trade, the opening of the financial system and privatization has been remarkable in this process. In this way, the foreign direct investment inflows in the Brazilian Economy and its relation with the pattern of the external trade are analysed, verifying the inherent chances and risks, especially regarding the intra-company transactions.
