This paper describes a simple and efficient procedure for obtaining an ionic liquid, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylsulfate, and its application in the synthesis of various xanthene derivatives, by coupling reactions of benzaldehyde or substituted benzaldehydes with cyclic 1,3-diketones and 2-naphthol. These are done with the objective of having an alternative to the classic synthetic methods, according to the principles of green chemistry, avoiding the use of organic solvents and expensive catalysts. The preparation of various xanthene derivatives is achieved with good yields. The derivatives were characterized by 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The method of preparation is suitable for its potential introduction into the laboratory practice curriculum of university students who have disciplines related to chemistry.
