Watching Brief: Report on Covid-19 outbreaks in India

This report is a watching brief on the Covid-19 outbreaks in India from 30/01/2020 -11/01/2021. India confirmed its first COVID-19 infection in Kerala, a southwestern coastal state. Data was collected from various journals and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. COVID-19 outbreak trends, demographic characteristics, symptoms and unusual features were analysed. The first documented COVID-19 positive case was reported in the Emergency Department in General Hospital, Thrissur, Kerala. The total number of confirmed cases as of 11th January 2021 is 10,466,595 of which 222,526 were active cases. The number of recovered cases is 10,092,909 which includes cumulative cured/discharges/migrated cases. And the total number of deaths in India due to COVID-19 is 1,51,160. India is currently the second-worst COVID-19 affected country in the World. As per analysis; several lineages from Europe, USA and East Asia that were probably acquired through international travel modes; were circulating amongst the Indian population. Initially, the risk-prone states included Maharashtra, Delhi and Madhya Pradesh with Infection spreading swiftly across to 35 states till date. The observed secondary attack rates ranged 1.2% in health care, 2.6% in community and 9% in households. The present findings confirm the unrelenting spread of SARS CoV-2 virus with considerable implications on the lives of general population.
