6 voices in 10 minutes: Expanding the horizons of education Diabetes education during transition times Adolescence is a period in which occur changes related to individuals’ growth, development and personality formation. During this phase, adolescents suffering from type 1 diabetes go through a path, since childhood and together with their family, towards self-care and personal autonomy to be reached in adulthood. Along this path, they find new socialization spaces and unlike childhood, different situations arise, such as peer social activities, sexual development, exposure on drugs consumption, moving away from home or first-time jobs, among others. These experiences need to be considered when planning diabetes education.
