THE ROLE OF TRADE UNIONS IN REPRESENTING WORKERS ON DIGITAL LABOR PLATFORMS
Abstract
This research examines the specific challenges faced by digital platform workers. Currently, the legal status of these workers remains ambiguous, and the regulatory frameworks, unprepared for these developments in the transformation of the labour market, significantly hinder collective bargaining efforts. The paper argues that labour law reforms are essential to explicitly recognize and regulate platform work, granting independent workers in this sector the right to form and join unions. Such reforms would empower platform workers to advocate for their rights, ensuring they are not left behind in the ever-evolving digital economy. Ultimately, the active participation of adaptive and revitalized unions will be crucial in securing fair and just treatment for digital platform workers on a global scale.
