This paper presents the results of the archaeological study of the material culturefrom four contexts in the historical sector of the city of Popayán and surroundingsdating to the end of the 16th century and the 17th century. Each of them representdifferent social sectors established during the colonial times. The analysis of the material culture of these four contexts has allowed to solvequestions such as: which were the aspects of ceramic manufacture of the pre- Hispanicperiod that lasted in the local production during the first century and a half ofcolonization, which were the characteristic that the local production presented, whattype of ceramic was imported, how this good was distributed among the different sectorsthat conformed the colonial society and in what way this distribution is indicating adifferential access to these consumption goods.
