Madrid's cultural scene accounts in the 1980s have traditionally been monopolized by the phenomenon known as la Movida. This article aims to recover a cultural and media reality that has remained hidden over the years: the free radio movement and its relationship with alternative music scenes outside the dominant market logic. With this purpose in mind, this work proposes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the place music programming occupied within these radio stations. Throughout the article, attention is paid to the percentages of airtime devoted to music on different radio stations and the possible ideological meanings that this content may have had for their listeners. Finally, we will try to reveal what role these stations played as crucial elements in the dynamization of some of Madrid's underground music scenes outside la Movida.
