A Narrative Inquiry of Fitness Models’ Diet Experience
Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to analyze the diet experiences of fitness models with expertise in dieting to help the public in proper self-care and healthy diet and improve their quality of life. METHODS We selected seven fitness models who have competed and won in fitness competitions for > 2 years. We analyzed their diet experiences, the process they underwent to reach their fitness goal, and the changes in their lives after successful dieting. RESULTS The fitness models discussed the external and internal changes and changes in social attitudes they experienced through dieting. They talked about the problems of following extreme and unproven diets online and side effects of our superficial society. They emphasized the importance of healthy eating and exercise as self-care methods that the public should practice. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the importance of self-care in the modern world and show that the external changes caused by dieting can significantly impact on one’s life. Additionally, first-time dieters are often unsure of measures to take; therefore, seeking the help of an experienced dieting professional can markedly contribute to their success.
