Abstract
Based on the university’s impact on and responsibilities toward society, the authors argue that modern-day scientific communication is subject to the same imperatives as general communication: it must be fast, readable, and effective. With the proliferation of media devices that characterizes the digital era, they ask whether such concepts as environment and environmental footprint can be heuristic. For example, do universities have a responsibility to encourage or discourage the use of services such as Google, Facebook, and Wikipedia?
