Kazan school of criminal law: From the origins to the present day

Abstract

The emergence, formation, and development of the Kazan school of criminal law, which was created by G.I. Solntsev, A.P. Chebyshev-Dmitriev, and G.F. Grigorovich, were discussed. Its contribution to the social and political life of the Republic of Tatarstan and Russia was considered. At the early stage, the activity of the Kazan school of criminal law was based on A.A. Piontkovsky’s research works published in 1899–1915. In these works, the nature and social role of the following criminal law institutions were viewed from a different perspective: conditional sentence, release on parole, time limitation for criminal prosecution, death penalty, etc. Subsequently, A.T. Bazhanov, B.S. Volkov, V.P. Malkov, M.D. Lysov, and others continued to develop the ideas and concepts of the Kazan school of criminal law under the conditions of shaping and strengthening of the status of the Republic of Tatarstan.
