After some explanations about God save the King as a hymn, originally used in England, but soon also in Germany, Beethoven's piano-variations about this theme will be examined closely. Although it might not be obvious at first glance, the composition turns out to be batde music at its centre. In particular, variations no. IV to VI correspond directly to the typical sequence: attack and fight - lament about the victims - march of victory. Around this kind of musical concentration, an attitude of cheerfull keyboard playing is dominating. The idea behind the music, however, brings us especially to an understanding of the eventful character of the music itself. This can be recognized in certain factors of suspense of which variation no. I already gives warning.
