The impact of economic opening and liberalization on Mexico´s regional manufacturing industry after the signing of NAFTA is analyzed in this article from the perspective of Verdoom´s Law. The analysis is divided into three periods: 1960-1980 (import substitution), 1985-1993 (trade liberalization after joining the GATT), and 1993-1998 (total opening to foreign direct investment—the NAFTA era). Likewise, an alternative specification is given for Verdoom´s Law, conditionally called Verdoom´s Law, whereby productivity growth depends not only on the rate of growth of the product but also on other factors involved in its evolution.
