“Cross-border environmental peace” in development contexts: the convergence of peace with de-territorialized development

The year 2015 was meant to be a seminal year in global geopolitics due to the transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In short, this transition is significant because the MDGs, even though they raised global consciousness around the need to combat poverty, remained indicator-based, and thus, they did not adequately address socio-economic inequalities and power imbalances in global affairs. Whereas the MDGs aimed to address poverty, the SDGs focus more closely on development, justice and peace-related issues. In fact, the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda includes both objectives, to be addressed within nation-states and relations between nation-states.
