Abstract
Gallipoli occupies a strategic position guarding the entrance of the Dardanelles. It was one of the most important naval headquarters of the Ottoman Empire. During first three years of the Republic (1923-26) it was the center of Gelibolu Vilayet. A study undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Social Security at that time sheds immense light on the social, cultural and economic life the city.
