A critic of European stature, Eugen Simion devoted his life to literature and in particular to the writers of Romania, a country where, to quote Paul Celan, live “men and books”. A task that he accomplished in numerous writings – we list only a few such as Romanian Writers of Today, Critical Fragments – and in the encyclopaedic enterprise of the General Dictionary of Romanian Literature as well as in the creation of the admirable collection Fundamental Works, which is the Romanian equivalent of the Pleiades Library, without forgetting the integral publication of all the manuscripts of Eminescu. Excelling in grasping the profound structure of literary evolution, he also succeeded in focusing his analysis on particular authors who were all allies in his intellectual and spiritual quest.
