This article examines some aspects of the relationship between schooling and broader cultural processes using, as documental source, textbooks produced for teacher training courses which circulated in Brazil and Portugal in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The research focused on elements capable of generalization, including the unity of school structure and the different practices prescribed for teachers, which were designed to root values and ideals in the training process. We analyzed the following manuals: Curso Practico de Pedagogia, by Mr. Daligault (1874); Elementos de pedagogia, by Jose Maria da Graça Affreixo and Henrique Freire (1870); and Lições de Pedagogia Geral e de História da Educação, by Alberto Pimentel Filho (1932).
