This paper deals with the Czech version of the popular story Peter of Provence and the Fair Maguelone, its origins as a late mediaeval prose romance written in Middle French, and its passage to the Czech lands during the second half of the 16th century via Veit Warbeck’s German translation and its first edition, both influenced by Martin Luther’s ideas for the reformation of the Church. We follow up with an overview and classification of existing Czech editions and other forms of the story (one reworking and popular songs). In this study, we analyse not only the relations and differences between French, German, and Czech versions of the story but also possible connections between Czech and Polish versions. We also consider the possibility that the Polish version served as a source of inspiration for certain Czech editions or for the anonymous reworking of the theme.
