Archaeological research into the periods following the Early Middle Ages in Slovenia

Abstract

The authors outline the archaeological research into the periods following the Early Middle Ages in Slovenia, from its beginnings in the late 19th centur y up to the present. The key research projects and orientations, in-stitutional frameworks and the main concepts that have been determining the development of the archaeology of these later periods are explained within the context of the development of Slovenian archaeology and the social circumstances that surround the field. The authors point out the relations between archaeology on the one hand and history and art history on the other, seeing them as vital to understanding archaeology’s role in researching periods that are well documented in written sources
