Standardization of Benton Face Recognition Test in a Turkish Normal Adult Population
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Face Recognition Test which was developed by Benton and colleagues is a neuropsychological test that evaluates face recognition disability following right hemisphere posterior lesions. Face recognition test consists of a 22 paged book (A4 size) which includes face photographs and a recording form for answers. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we performed the standardization of Benton Face Recognition Test in a Turkish normal adult population. Normative data were obtained from 256 normal healthy subjects aged between 20-88 which had 3 different education levels (none or primary, secondary and high-school, university). METHODS: In order to control the reliability of the test, “test - retest” method was applied on data of 48 normal subjects and “split-half reliability” was applied on whole data. Test scores of 30 patients who suffered from posterior cerebral infarction (half localized in right, half localized in left hemisphere) was compared to controls to evaluate predictive validity of the test. RESULTS: As a result, there was a negative correlation between test performances and age and education levels of subjects. Reliability level of the test was r=.78 for short form and r=.84 for long form. Test scores of normal subjects were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to that of patients with right posterior cerebral arterial zone infarction. CONCLUSION: Consequently, data obtained from our sample showed that Benton Face Recognition Test can be applied as a reliable and valid test in Turkish population
