Article in German, Abstracts in English and GermanIn this paper, statements in a letter from Alexander von Humboldt to the German diplomat Count Ferdinand von Galen, dated June 21, 1830, are used to explain Humboldt’s attitude toward a project of an expedition to Spain which had been put forward by the Spanish government. Humboldt’s communications in the same letter also illustrate his criticism of the conservative Spanish political system and his attitude toward the movement for independence in Latin America in its global context around the year 1830.
