Les statues honorifiques entre texte et image
Abstract
The relationships between text and image are more complex than simple simultaneous vision and reading, as the study of three sculptures shows. The Tyrannocides group is invested with a political weight in Athens that gives them an historical role and transforms them into ideograms. The statues of Kleopatra and Dioskourides at Delos link the owners of the house to the world of notable euergetes (wealthy benefactors) due to the representational and presentational styles of the effigies as well as the inscription on it. The statue of Demosthenes updates the patriotic monument of the Tyrannocides by introducing thought or reflection into the action depicted.
