Aim. To examine possible variants of ideological concepts as state ideology of the modern Russian Federation and compare their foreign policy potential.Methodology. The paper uses methods of comparative, historical and political analysis.Results. The analysis concludes that none of the broad and narrow ideological conceptions used in recent decades is capable of becoming as significant a tool of Russia’s foreign policy as the communist ideology was in Soviet times. The reviewed ideological concepts are either too narrow in their target audience, or too widespread in the world and the international community does not recognize Russia as a leader in their implementation, or they are too controversial and have low potential attractiveness for other states in the light of more pressing issues of international relations and world development.Research implications. The results of the study may be used as an important argument in the ongoing dispute in academic and political circles between supporters and opponents of introducing state ideology in Russia.
