The Sarmatian settlement discovered during the contruction of the road infrastructure at Cerneteaz- Sit 7 (Timiş county)
Abstract
Our research was occasioned by the construction of the connecting road between DN68-A1 and the site was conventionally called Site 7-Cerneteaz. The excavated area was 21 139 m2, of which the Sarmatian features were concentrated on an area approx. 4–5000 m2. Following the typological analysis, we could observe that the settlement has many similarities but also differences compared to the important sites researched and published in Banat (Timişoara-Freidorf, Arad-Barieră, Hodoni-Pustă, Șagu-Sit A1_1). First of all, the settlement stands out for its single chronological phase. Our excavations revealed the limits of habitation to the southwest and northeast. There are few chances that our field research will continue, but based an the relief, we can suppose that in the surface uncovered by us, we suprised a significant part of the settlements. The large, uncovered areas during the rescue excavations related to the road infrastructure allow us to make some observation regarding the internal organization of the settlements. In our case we can see that the annexes, which could be interpreted as dwelling, are grouped in the south-western part of the surface, and the workshops (smoker installations) in the opposite part of the group of features. Between these two grouping of features the storage pits of various types are located, whose initially destination cannot be interpreted with certainty. The chronological framework of the settlements researched by us is based on the chronology of the bronze brooch, with inverted foot, but also on analogies of ceramic pot fragments. In our opinion, the features we researched mainly dated in the 4th century A.D.
