THE ARABIC LINGUISTIC TERM IN TRANSLATED DICTIONARIES: A CRITICAL READING OF A SELECTED SAMPLE FROM THE LINGUISTICS DICTIONARY BY GEORGES MOUNIN, TRANSLATED BY DR. JAMAL AL-HADHARI
Abstract
Abstract : This article aims to examine the issue of translated linguistic terms by analyzing selected terms from The Linguistics Dictionary, authored by the French linguist Georges Mounin in collaboration with a team of linguists and translated into Arabic by Jamal Al-Hadhari. A brief sample was selected as an entry point to explore the challenges and issues surrounding the translation of modern Arabic linguistic terms, with the goal of assessing whether these terms meet the standard requirements of specialized terminology development. The study highlights problems arising from the lack of a unified methodology, such as the prevalence of literal translation and insufficient contextual analysis, as well as the shortcomings of translators in adhering to the demands of terminology creation. Conversely, the study acknowledges efforts that have contributed to reviewing and correcting these shortcomings, underscoring the importance of adopting precise methodologies to achieve consistency and clarity in translated linguistic terms.
