Lorsque le Diable se mêle de Religion : le Diablo predicador (Valence, 1820-1821)
Abstract
Church was among the subjects discussed at the time of the Cortes sessions which bisected Spain during the Trienio liberal. The reforms proposed by the liberals regarding the religious discipline opposed, a priori, the latter, who supported the idea of Christian liberalism, to the royalists, who were resistant to change. This is « a priori » because the study of the Diablo predicador, a periodical published in Valencia in 1820-1821, proves that its author, Anastasio Navas Martín, staunch royalist (as he specified when introducing himself to his readers), did not hesitate to agree with the liberal theory regarding the religious discipline because it was sovereign. Indeed, thanks to the analysis of the columns and books advertised in connection with religious politics in the newspaper, this article proves that Anastasio Navas Martín was an liberal absolutist, contradictory terms, the first of which doesn’t go hand in hand with ultra-montanism and the defense of Inquisition which the royalists supported.
