Afrancesados, moderados, exaltados, masones y comuneros: periódicos y periodistas ante el conflicto político en la prensa de Madrid durante el Trienio Liberal (1820-1823)
Abstract
After the restoration of freedom of the press, the Madrid press spread the political debates of the period among public opinion. With a notable competition between the various mastheads, gaining readers became a political and journalistic battle. Due to this fact, journalists took side for the existent division between moderate and exalted liberalism. Despite the initial predominance of the French-like press, the events of 1821 led to the emergence of a novel exalted press, bounded to an increasing political mobilization that reflected in its evolution the growing division between masons and comuneros. The attempted absolutist coup d’état of 7 July 1822 was a blow to the most conservative press, which ceded its primacy to an increasingly radicalized comunero press. A few months later, the occupation of Madrid by the French troops concluded with the freedom of the press that such fruitful debates had allowed.
