On the material of the social reportages from Russian and American magazine press the article analyzes the pragmatic peculiarities of the introductive predicates introducing other person’s opinion in the form of the indirect speech. The quantitative method of investigation is used. The introductive predicates of reporting introduce the subject’s voice which, from the journalist’s point of view, is competent in the situation under coverage and therefore is interpreted by the reader as the reliable source of social information. Making judgments and statements in the form of the indirect speech allows the journalist to assign responsibility for the accuracy of the information to the subject, whose statements are quoted in the report. Introductive predicates, introducing sequential judgments and representing relevant knowledge about a certain social situation, are the best source of exploring the linguistic means, which provide credible information because they: 1) connect the mental domain, actualized in the input judgment with the modal and evidentially values of this judgment; 2) act as carriers of these values. The undertaken research deepens the knowledge about the subjectivation of the reportage text depending on the strengthening / weakening of the presence of the subject of speech in a single statement. Detailed objective scenarios for the construction of a reportage text, in which the co-existence is perceived by the author and the reader as what is happening at the moment, as well as subjective scenarios, suggesting that the participants of mass media communication are involved in the interpretation of the once-going event. Within the framework of the genre of reportage the expediency of multi-aspect analysis of pragmatic grounds for the choice of introductive predicates is substantiated
