The article deals with the specifics of the development of personal motives of modern youth in participating in various projects of social education. The gap between ideal values and the ideals of social education, declared in educational standards and official documents and real rational and practical strategies of young people, expecting to receive certain benefits from participation in various social projects, build a social career in the form of a social elevator or acquire new acquaintances and connections for the multiplication of social capital. The work uses materials from a survey conducted among young people aged 18 to 23 in various cities of Russia, in the number of 2,400 people, and also provides data on the content analysis of the media (newspapers Argumenty i Fakty and MoskovskyKomsomolets) and social networks (VK, Fasebook, Instagram), showing the dynamics of the social sounding of social education, changing the meanings, goals and objectives, tools for obtaining it, both at the formal level (official publications in the media from 2000 to 2018), and at the informal level (informing about participation in tom or other m social project on their own page on various social networks). This also made it possible to identify common features of the construction of public discourse through official publications that shape attitudes towards social education and personal pages in social networks, which allows one to individually show personal involvement and inclusion in certain communities, the presence of significant social contacts and connections that construct the social capital of a young person, its possible further life trajectories and the possibilities of constructing social elevators. To date, we note the lack of coordination between the formal and informal discourse of social education, but pragmatism and rational understanding of the possibilities of this type of activity allow us to hope for a constructive combination and implementation in practical and universal programs of education of young people’s social education in higher education institutions of the country.
