Foreign Policy Features of Contemporary Armenia
Abstract
In 2018 Armenia witnessed change of power that became a sign of significant internal political changes. Even though the foreign policy of the country did not considerably change, it has acquired new features and is represented by new faces. The emphasis is currently put on external positioning of Armenia as a strong compatible state based on values shared by the whole Armenian community. In communication with partners Armenia is represented as a sovereign country that is able to choose formats of cooperation both with Russia and the EU independently. The changes should serve as basis for a renewed relationship with partners and international community. A more pragmatic approach towards both bilateral and multilateral partnerships is taken. Armenia will remain a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, but, at the same time, will continue active involvement into the projects led by the EU. The key priority for Armenia remains the question of Nagorno Karabkh conflict resolution. A distinguishing feature of the new leadership in this regard is growing emphasis on Artsakh (Nahorno Karabkh) involvement into negotiations. Apart from this, there is a tendency towards growing publicity and public discussion of taken political decisions. In so doing the new political elite underlines its legitimacy.
