A BICA DAS FREIRAS

Abstract

O local conhecido como Bica das Freiras se configura no folclore de Penedo, Alagoas, salientemente pela escassez de informações quanto a sua origem. Rezam lendas sobre holandeses, frades e freiras que teriam construído ou utilizado a bica desde a fundação do povoado de Penedo ainda no século XVI. Com o intuito de contribuir à preservação e valorização da Bica das Freiras, e porventura descobrir as suas origens históricas, a Superintendência do IPHAN em Alagoas instigou um projeto que foi executado pelo Núcleo de Ensino e Pesquisa Arqueológico da UFAL. O artigo a seguir apresenta algumas das atividades realizadas e resultados preliminares. ABSTRACT The locality known as Bica das Freiras(loosely, Nuns’ Well) figures prominently in the folklore of Penedo, Alagoas, most saliently due to the lack of information about its origins. Stories are told that include the Dutch, friars and nuns who either constructed or used the well since the foundation of the first settlement in Penedo in the 16th century. With the objective of preserving and valorize the Bica das Freiras, and perhaps even discovering its historical origins, the Superintendent Office of IPHAN in Alagoas originated a project that was carried out by the Center for Archaeological Teaching and Research (NEPA) of the Universidade Federal de Alagoas.
