This study aimed to investigate the vision of the nurse in the face of the practice of health education in the hospital environment. This is research with a qualitative approach, of the descriptive and exploratory type, in which seven nurses participated. These work on the wards of a medium-sized hospital located in the Southern Region of Rio Grande do Sul. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation, and was analyzed with the help of Thematic Content Analysis. Three categories emerged: Health education in the nurses’ practice; Difficulties in carrying out health education in the hospital environment and Strategies for implementing health education. The participants believe in the relevance of health education and seek to insert it in their routine. The lack of investment in training the professionals and the overload of activities were identified as the principal institutional problems which impede the exercising of health education.
