Exopolysaccharide production by optimized medium using novel marine Enterobacter cloacae MBB8 isolate and its antioxidant potential
Abstract
Exopolysaccharide (EPS) producing bacterial strains were isolated from the seawater of Gulf of Mannar region, Tamil Nadu. Using biochemical and molecular studies we identified the potent EPS producing bacterium as Enterobacter cloacae marine bacterial isolate B8 (MBB8). E. cloacae MBB8 produced 18.3 g/L of EPS in minimal media after 24 h. Further, we optimized the minimal media composition of E. cloacae MBB8 to maximize the biomass and EPS production by implementing response surface methodology (RSM). Using the modified minimal (MM) media, we were able to achieve 31.54 ± 4.95 g/L EPS production. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of glucose with trace amount of mannose in the molar ratio of 1: 1.5e−2 as the chemical composition of the EPS produced by E. cloacae MBB8. In summary, we had optimized media composition for EPS production in novel marine isolate E. cloacae MBB8, the EPS thus produced have notable antioxidant capacity for biotechnological and industrial applications.
