Kuzoku is a film collective founded in 2004 by Tomita Katsuya and Aizawa Toranosuke. This collective’s goal was to free itself from conventional production and distribution methods and develop its own. The way they are developed, the themes they address, and how they have been received in Japan and international film festivals have made Kuzoku films centrepieces of contemporary Japanese independent cinema. This article will present the collective’s works and examine the way they were produced and distributed. It aims to give suggestions for a reflection on Japanese independent cinema and the role Kuzoku plays in it.
