Predictive capabilities of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in assessing the effectiveness of antidepressant pharmacotherapy

Abstract

Introduction. In pharmacotherapy of depressive disorders the problem of searching for the predictors of therapeutic response remains relevant. Personality predictors may be important in determining the treatment tactics.The aim of this review is to determine the predictive capabilities of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in assessing the results of antidepressant pharmacotherapy in patients with depression (major depressive disorder).Materials and methods. The literature search was carried out in the PubMed and GoogleScholar systems published between 1990 and november 2021. Only prospective studies were selected that examined the relationship between pre-treatment TCI scores and the effectiveness of antidepressant therapy.Results. A total of 19 studies were found (Nsum=3559). Harm avoidance was predictor of treatment effectiveness in 11 studies (Nsum=2527), reward dependence - in 5 (Nsum=1801), and cooperativeness in 7 (Nsum=1554). In only 2 studies, personality dimensions were not associated with the effectiveness of therapy (Nsum = 234). In 11 studies (Nsum=1173) baseline values of personal characteristics were indicated, which allowed to include them into the meta-analysis.
