Investigation the Relationship Between Dental Students\' Study Skills and Their Educational Status in Babol University of Medical Sciences

Background: The ability to study correctly has the greatest effect on academic performance of students. Specially for the university students it is important to learn the ability to obtain a good strategy and method to study, so they can make the most of their time and resources because it effects directly on their performance. The main purpose of this study was to determine relationship between the students' skills of Babol University of Medical Sciences and their academic status at the university. Methods: This study is analytical descriptive study. This study which has been done in 2017 among 193 students of Babol University of Medical Sciences, 167 were enrolled. Data were collected using Congos´ Study Skills Inventory (SSI) including six subscales. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to study the quantitative variables. Independent t-test was performed using SPSS software version 20 for multiple comparison between groups. Finding: it was found that the variety of reading methods in married people was significantly higher than singles (p=0.01) , but no significant difference was found between study skills in single and married students (p>0.05). T-test result shows study skill and other variables was not significant between two gender. The result showed that study skills had a direct correlation with the students' academic scores in each semester (p=0.02 , r=0.22) But other variables, such as age and high school grades and two previous semesters, did not show any relationship with study skills (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that most of the students at the school of Dentistry of Babol University of Medical Sciences had moderate and weak study skills. These results shows that proper education and study skills in students is so important that scientists should focus more on these skills.
