The Role of Social Media in Nursing Education: A Systematic Review

Background and Objectives: Nowadays, social networks have become a suitable and common tool for teaching and learning. So far, there has been no review study on the role of social media in nursing education. Therefore, this study was aims to review the role of social media in nursing education. Methods: In this systematic review, related articles published during 2010-2022 were reviewed. The keywords “social media”, “education”, “nurse”, and “nursing” in Persian and English were used for searching in MagIran, SID, Elsevier, Web of Sciences, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. Finally, 13 eligible studies were selected for the review. Results: According to teachers, the use of social media had advantages such as ease of giving feedback to learners, increasing the possibility of professional and interprofessional education, and development and support of learning. According to learners, it had benefits such as increasing self-efficacy, improving learning, and increasing communication. Conclusion: Although social media can be useful tools along with traditional teaching/learning methods for improving the teaching/learning process, interprofessional education, and self-efficacy of learners, there have some concerns including the difficulty designing a suitable and attractive educational platform and the possible violation of the privacy of users.
