Bioguided isolation and characterization of bioactives from Polygonum alpinum all rhizomes
Abstract
Polygonum alpinum All (Polygonaceae) rhizomes was loaded in soxhlet for extraction with methanol and water as solvent. The extracts obtained were assayed for anti-inflammatory potency via carrageenan and formaldehyde prompted infection among experimental animals. The methanolic extract method presented potent anti-inflammatory activity in comparison to aqueous extract in both experimental models. Column chromatography was used for the isolation and characterization of active constituents in methanolic extract. Four active compounds, Octacosan-1-ol (1), Tridecane-1,9-diol (2), 4-hydroxybutyl acetate (3) and Octanoic acid (4) were isolated. Two dimensional NMR procedures were used for the characterization of isolated compounds. In-vitro anti-inflammatory potency of isolated compounds was assayed via Human RBC membrane stabilization and Protein denaturation methods.
