Characterization of the geriatric patient with hip fracture

Abstract

Introduction: Hip fracture in geriatric patients is a problem of modern medicine, due to population aging, the high cost of its treatment and because it is considered extremely serious. Objective: To characterize the situation of geriatric patients with hip fracture. Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out from August 1 to October 31, 2021 at Vladimir Ilich Lenin General University Hospital, of Holguin Province. The sample consisted of seventy patients. Sociodemographic characteristics and clinical-humoral conditions were identified, while mortality until hospital discharge was evaluated. The results were entered into an electronic database and processed applying descriptive statistics. Results: Hypertensive geriatric female patients aged 80-89 years were more prone to suffering from extracapsular hip fracture. Anemia, cardiovascular decompensation and pneumonias delayed surgical interventions and accounted for the highest figures for postoperative morbimortality, together with decubitus ulcers and late care due to different causes. Mortality was higher in patients who did not undergo surgery. Conclusions: The results coincide with what has been published by other authors; the importance of rapid and multidisciplinary care for these patients was demonstrated.
