Local and Regional Flap Approaches for the Repair of Postsurgical Tissue Defects in the Head and Neck Region
Abstract
Introduction:In this retrospective study, the indications and success, complication and mortality rates of local and regional flaps used in head and neck reconstruction were investigated.Methods:Patients operated for head and neck reconstruction between the years 2014 and 2019 were included in this retrospective study.Results:A total of 41 patients were included in the study. The mean patient age was 60.3±20.6 (range: 8-89). In 39.0% (n=16) of patients, the pectoralis major muscle flap was used for reconstruction. In 17.1% (n=7) of patients, the local advancement flap was used. In all, 29% (n=12) of patients had squamous cell carcinoma, 19.5% (n=8) had basal cell carcinoma, and 14.6% (n=6) of patients had tracheoesophageal fistula. The overall complication rate was 29.2%. The mortality rate was 2.4% (n=1).Conclusion:In this retrospective study, it was objectively demonstrated that local regional pedicle flaps can be used safely in the repair of head and neck defects with correct patient analysis, wound site and defect evaluation, and flap planning.
