Polycythemia in Nephrotic Syndrome

Abstract

The association of polycythemia with kidney diseases such as adult polycystic kidney disease, kidney tumors, and renal artery stenosis is well known. However, polycythemia associated with nephrotic syndrome (NS) is rarely seen and documented. We retrospectively studied seven patients with NS who presented with polycythemia. The pattern of the glomerular injury, the treatment given, and the response to treatment was documented. The response of hemoglobin and hematocrit to the treatment of NS was studied. The patients showed decline in hematocrit levels with remission of proteinuria.
