Realizing and controlling artificial gauge fields in quantum systems constitutes an intriguing route towards simulating of exotic quantum theories. Here, the authors propose a tunable strategy to engineer strain and synthetic magnetic fields in optical lattices from coupling to trapped Bose-Einstein condensates.
