The article discusses the role of sociocultural component in the formation of the dominant styles of organizational leadership and governance in Ukraine, as well as the factors affecting the process of becoming a leader under modern conditions. Knowledge of social and cultural features of the national leadership practices can predict behavior parameters and can determine attributive characteristics of leaders which are the most typical, socially relevant and effective within a particular cultural tradition. The ongoing reforms in Ukraine foresee modernization of management systems at all organizational levels, qualitative renewal of the national model of administrative culture. The reforms actualize the need of creating a new type of leaders who can exercise effective leadership in the new socio-economic and political realities in the country. The article pointed out that the well-known models of leadership, claiming the socio-cultural universality, however, do not work when you try to apply them onto the countries with economies in transition, like Ukraine. Therefore selection of the effective leadership styles to a greater extent is determined by cultural factors, which are significant in terms of identifying the type of leader in a particular situation. The author concludes that the sociocultural characteristics of leadership and management styles in Ukraine are based on the system of values, beliefs and traditions that have emerged in the course of the historical and socio-economic development of the country, as well as under the influence of contemporary globalization processes.
