Abstract

The article concerns issues in the recruitment of ethnic Caucasians into Red Army units and the military’s use of national (ethnic) units during the defense of the Caucasus (July – December 1942). Particular attention is paid to the political and historical context of Caucasian national divisions as well as to discussions among the country's and the Caucasian national republics' military commanders and political leaders regarding the level of military preparedness and political loyalty of ethnically Caucasian troops.
