Drawing upon texts belonging to different periods of Habermasian thought, this paper exposes the conception of procedural rationality as standing in a genealogical connection with the normative ideas of bourgeois public sphere and of ideal speech situation. In examining the normative content of such a justifying rationality, the so-called “rules of reason”, the article also explores several implications of the public dimension of the unavoidable and counterfactual idealizations of rational discourses.
