This study examined the validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). The DASS was originally developed in Australia and is a multiple scale for measuring depression, anxiety and stress. During the course of this study, the Japanese three-scale version of the DASS as well as the Beck Depression Inventory, Stress Checklist and the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory-Form JXY were administered to 138 university students. When examining the validity of the results of the study using the split-half method, the coefficients of correlation ranged from 0.698 to 0.860. These values confirm the validity of the Japanese DASS. When examining the reliability of the results of the study, the coefficients of correlation ranged from 0.466 to 0.608. These values confirm the reliability of the Japanese DASS. The overall results of the study suggest the efficacy of the Japanese version of the DASS for application in the student counseling of Japanese students.
